. . . . the Internal Revenue Service announced that at the end of the year it will stop accepting paper coupons for deposits of payroll taxes, corporate income and estimated taxes, and various other federal tax payments. Starting Jan. 1, 2011 businesses will generally be required to use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System to make federal tax deposits.
. . . . the Internal Revenue Service is stepping up its challenge of the "contractor vs. employee status" classification of workers, especially in the construction and landscaping industries. And they are beginning to rely on reporting from states that have passed legislation requiring civil and sometimes criminal penalties for mis-classification of these workers. As much as it pains us to say so, each company using subcontractors, etc, should re-examine their position and classification and consider treating certain workers as employees and filing all the necessary returns and paying the related taxes. Better than being shut down for not doing it right.
. . . . Congress has repealed the requirement that ALL businesses, no matter what size, must issue 1099s in early January, 2013 to any vendors who were paid $600 or more during the year?
